VASJ – which has won seven district titles in a row – received the No. 4 seed in the Division II Ashtabula Lakeside District tournament and will host Edgewood on Feb. 25 in a sectional semifinal.
The VASJ-Edgewood winner will face either West Geauga or St. Martin de Porres on Feb. 28.
The seeding is rare for the Vikings (8-10), which has not been less than a 1 or 2 seed at the D2 district tournament.
“I thought the seeding was very fair, while I was hopeful for a 3 seed, Glenville earned it and we didn’t. The best part about this tournament is everyone is 0-0,” VASJ coach Babe Kwasniak said. “Although we haven’t had the best regular season, we didn’t win seven district titles in a row on accident. Our last 4 games will get us ready – Lake Catholic (2 seed) followed by Mentor (1 seed), CCC (1 seed) and St. Edward (1 seed).
“I wish we would go back to the old way (of bracket draw) – I loved the coaches getting together to do the seeding. Plus waiting until 5 p.m. while every other district has their seeding 3 hours earlier is painful.”
