Villa Angela-St. Joseph earned its first victory of the season with a dominant 41-0 win at Collinwood on Sept. 6.
Junior QB Kevin Eiseman threw TD passes to Cam Williams and Noah Clarke and the defense bounced back from a very tough first week to get the shutout.
It was also the first victory for head coach and former Viking standout Elvis Grbac.
“The guys really responded after a tough Week 1 and went on the road and executed the way we feel we should,” Grbac said. “They handled everything well and prepared very hard during the week and it paid off.
“I thought the defense was great especially after not playing well against the run the week before. And not just starters but all the guys who got a chance to play stepped up and got the shutout.”
On offense, Grbac said the key was in the red zone where VASJ came away with touchdowns.
“I think the big thing was getting production in the red zone and scoring TDs when we got down there,” Grbac said. “All of our backs played well and Kevin just keeps getting better with every snap and he’s learning all the time.”
VASJ is 1-1 and hosts Waterloo on Sept. 13 at Euclid High School.
