Boys Varsity Baseball · Viking Baseball Claims Sectional Title; Shut Out Wellington 3-0

On Wednesday May 15th the VASJ baseball team traveled to Wellington for a Sectional Final match up.  The Vikings played a near flawless game and emerged with a shutout 3-0 victory over the opposing Wellington Dukes.

Senior Kyle Trickett took the ball on the mound for the Vikings and made sure that this would not be his last time on the hill for VASJ in his career.  Trickett was magnificent, pitching all seven innings allowing only 1 hit and 2 walks.  Trickett had the Dukes guessing all night long and pounded the strike zone resulting in a total of 12 Ks for the game.

With Trickett dominating on the mound, the Viking offense knew if they could grind out a few runs they would be in a great position to win the game.  They did exactly that.  After 3 innings of scoreless baseball the Vikings came up to bat in the top of the 4th.  With one out in the inning and the bases empty, Trickett drew a walk to give VASJ their first base runner of the game.  Trickett promptly stole second base and advanced to third on a single by fellow senior Owen Nunnally.  With 2 outs in the inning, senior Kobie Parker stepped up to the plate with the potential to drive in the go ahead run.  The senior did not let the opportunity pass by as he laced a single down the first base line scoring Trickett for the Vikings first run of the game.  Following the lead of the seniors ahead of him, sophomore Liam Brown came to the plate and delivered a 2-out single of his own to score Nunnally and give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

The Vikings added an additional insurance run in the top of the 5th.  Junior Jake Smith reached after being hit by a pitch and stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch.  Fellow Junior Johnathan Cook stepped up to the plate and executed brilliantly by driving a ball to right field to score Smith on a sacrifice fly making the score 3-0 Vikings.

Trickett made sure that was all the runs the Vikings would need, shutting down the Dukes in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings.  The Vikings flashed their defense as they ended the game with a 1-4-3 double play to secure the victory and the Sectional Championship.

It is the first Sectional title for VASJ baseball since 2006.

The Vikings move on to the District Semi-final on Monday May 20th as they travel to Lakewood High School where they will play the winner of Wickliffe and Beachwood.  The District Semi-final game will be under the lights and begin at 7:00pm.
