On Monday night the VASJ Varsity Baseball Team traveled to Elyria to take on Open Door Christian. The Vikings returned to the Village with a win by the final score of 17-5.
After a scoreless first inning the Viking were able to manufacture runs in the second inning. Kobie Parker led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a Jailen McMillian single to right field. McMillan and Andrew Oriani both were able to advance around the bases and eventually score as well, giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead after 2 innings.
The bats stayed hot in the 3rd inning as the Vikings banged out 5 hits in the inning and combined that with fielding errors by Open Door to allow VASJ to plate 8 runs in the inning. Kyle Trickett led off the inning with a double and came back up to the plate later in the inning to deliver an RBI double. Jake Smith, A. Oriani, and McMillian each contributed hits in the inning as well.
The Vikings added 3 more runs in the 5th inning and 3 additional runs in the 6th to make the final score 17-5.
As a team the Vikings recorded 14 hits. Trickett led the offense going 4-5 with 3 RBI, 3 doubles, and 3 runs scored. Jake Smith went 3-5 with three singles and an RBI, Jalen McMillian went 2-3 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, and Nate Oriani went 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Zac Tizzano got the win on the mound for the Vikings, pitching all six innings. Tizzano only allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 6 batters.
The win moves the Viking record to 10-10 on the season.
VASJ returns to the diamond on Tuesday May 7th as they travel to Warrensville to take on the Tigers. That game will begin at 4:30pm at Warrensville Heights High School.
VASJ will begin post-season play on Wednesday May 15th as they travel to Wellington in a Sectional match up. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:00pm at Wellington Community Park.
