The VASJ Baseball team picked up win number 5 on the year last night as they beat Cleveland Heights by a final score of 10-7.
The Vikings did not get off to the start they were hoping for after coming off back to back losses to Trinity. They were quickly down 3-0 after the first inning. After holding Cleveland Heights scoreless in the second inning the Vikings were able to gain some momentum and put one run on the board. VASJ trailed 3-1 after two innings, and then the game changed.
After shutting down the Tigers once again, the Vikings came up to bat in the bottom of the third inning and exploded for 9 runs in the inning. Nate Oriani led off the inning by drawing and Jake Smith and Johnathon Cook each followed with singles to get the first three batters of the inning aboard. The Vikings continued to make solid contact and recorded 9 hits in the inning to drive in the 9 runs. Nate Oriani and Jake Smith each scored twice in the inning, and Johnathon Cook had two hits in the inning.
VASJ did not score another run the rest of the game but the damage had been done. Cleveland Heights made the Vikings sweat a little bit as they recorded 4 runs in the 5th inning to cut the deficit to 10-7, but they could not find any more runs after the 5th inning.
AJ Fabo got the win on the mound for the Vikings, pitching the final 4.1 innings and allowing only two earned runs.
As a team the Vikings had 13 hits in the game. They were led by Pat Creegan who went 3-3 with 1 RBI, Johnathon Cook went 3-4 with 2 RBI, Jake Smith went 2-4 with 2 RBI, AJ Fabo went 2-3 with 1 RBI, and Andrew Oriani drove in 2 runs as well.
The Vikings play again today in game 2 of the series with Cleveland Heights. They travel to Forrest Hills Park to take on the Tigers at 4:30pm.
