The Viking Softball team wrapped up its preseason preparations with a scrimmage against Chagrin Falls on Thursday night. Coach Ron Fabo was pleased with the way the team played in their first live action on the field.
“I would consider our scrimmage a success,” says Fabo. “The team received valuable playing time and experience.”
The 2019 Viking Softball team will be a young group with no seniors on the roster and returning only two players with years of varsity experience.
“As expected, we started off a little nervous and somewhat tentative,” Fabo says. “After making some nice plays in the field, including turning two double plays and an outstanding catch in the outfield, the team loosened up and began to play with more confidence.”
Coach Fabo’s outlook on the upcoming season is positive, and that is a testament to the culture and team camaraderie that exists.
“We will go through a learning curve early in the season, but the coaching staff believes that as the team gains experience they will compete in every game,” Fabo says.
Coach Fabo believes that there is high potential for this team.
“As we continue working on skill development, their knowledge of the game and confidence will grow.,” he says. “They do not yet realize what they can be capable of.”
Leading the team offensively will be the bats of Lucy Vidmar, Emmy Rowell, and Kimani Ball. The pitching staff for the Vikings will be led by Ariel Winfrey, Jasmine Riddle, and Caroline Monaco. Behind the plate for VASJ doing the catching will be Rhiannan Edwards.
Coach Fabo expects major contributions from all members of the team.
“We are looking forward to working with the girls throughout the season.”
The regular season begins for the Vikings on Monday, March 25, as they play against Cardinal. That game will be played at Euclid High School and will begin at 4:30 p.m.
