VASJ rallied from a first-half deficit to knock off Perry, 59-54, in a Division II district semi on March 6 at Ashtabula Lakeside.
The Vikings will face the winner of Lake Catholic/Geneva on March 9 in a district championship game.
“Those guys didn’t win 19 games on accident, and if they make a couple more shots it is 20,” VASJ coach Babe Kwasniak said.
“I thought Graham (Koppelman) making four 3s absolutely saved us. I can’t say enough about Coach Al Iacafono and Perry. We took their punches and we are still standing here …. Survive and advance.”
It is the 9th consecutive year the Vikings have made a district final.
“We will never take that for granted,” Kwasniak said.
Jordan Calhoun, Jonah Waag and Jaden Hameed were crucial in the win for VASJ, particularly in the crunch time and on defense.
Hameed scored 9 of his 13 points in the third quarter to spark the rally.
Khalil Mitcham scored 10 points for VASJ.
