On Monday night, the Lady Vikings traveled to St. Thomas Aquinas High School and came home with a 55-44 win.
Both teams played solid defense and kept the game scoreless through the opening two minutes. VASJ junior Michele Blackshear opened the scoring with a steal and transition layup to kick start the Viking offense. Blackshear continued to be a disruption on the defensive end, forcing Aquinas into turnovers that Blackshear converted into layups for 10 first quarter points. Senior Kenya Ball started to heat up offensively as well, scoring five points in the opening quarter. St. Thomas’ Cassie Duplin countered with seven points of her own and teammate Haley Overdorf contributed five points as well. At the end of one quarter, VASJ trailed by three points.
In the second quarter, Blackshear continued to lead her team offensively with five more points in the quarter. Senior Iyana Smith stepped up and hit a three, and Ball contributed another field goal as well. The Lady Vikings outscored St. Thomas 11-8 in the second quarter.
After halftime, the Lady Vikings came out hungry for a win, led by senior Kenya Ball with seven points in the third. VASJ outscored St. Thomas Aquinas 20-6 in the third quarter and never looked back. The Lady Vikings won the fourth quarter 9-6 and closed the game out to win 55-44.
Michele Blackshear had her third 20-point game this season, netting 23 points in the game, Kenya Ball had 17, and Senior Lia Campbell added nine.
The lady Vikings had a quick turnaround as they returned to the Viking Village Tuesday for the regular season finale against Lake Catholic. Lake Catholic outlasted the Lady Vikings 56-54 in overtime.
It was a tale of two halves on Tuesday night. The first half belonged completely to the Lady Vikings as they went into halftime with a 30-16 lead. The second half was dominated by the Lady Cougars as they flipped the scoring, winning the second half by 14 points to even the score after regulation. The overtime period went back and forth and with four seconds remaining, VASJ had a chance to win the game, but the shot hit the back of the rim and bounced out as time expired, giving Lake Catholic a 56-54 win.
For the Vikings, senior Kenya Ball lead the team in scoring with 12 points, junior Michele Blackshear, and freshman Amya Parker each tallied nine points.
VASJ and Lake Catholic will meet again on Saturday, February 16, in the OHSAA Sectional Tournament. That game will be played at Lake Catholic High School and begin at 1 p.m.
