The VASJ Dance team traveled to Columbus this past weekend to compete with 40 other teams at the Buckeye Cheer and Dance Open Nationals competition. The Vikings competed in both the Varsity Jazz and Hip Hop divisions. Coach Najpaver was extremely proud of the Vikings team.
When Coach Najpaver initially signed the Vikings up for this competition she wasn’t sure if the team would be ready. Coach Najpaver pushed the Vikings out of their comfort zones during training sessions to be prepared for the performance.
There were several reasons the Vikings were entered into this competition but the main reasons were to get the student-athletes exposure in front of judges and to feel comfortable on the floor.
Coach Najpaver did not put pressure on the athletes to medal, but to her surprise, the athletes definitely rose to the challenge. The Vikings placed second in both the Varsity Hip-hop and Jazz categories.
“This was a successful weekend for the dance team,” Najpaver says. “But after reviewing the team’s scores and comments, there is work to be done before States.
The competition was a great opportunity for Viking Dancers to watch other teams, take notes, and apply feedback to their routines. The Vikings Dance team knows the hard work they need to put in the rest of this season, and they are looking forward to what Regionals and States have in store for them.
