Boys Varsity Basketball · VASJ BOYS BASKETBALL – Vikings defeat Maumelle to take 3rd at NEOSHO Classic in Missouri

VASJ will come home from Missouri with confidence, momentum and pride.

Not too bad for a team that lost the first game of the year in a rout and has played a grueling schedule.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph scored 17 of the first 19 points in the game to bury Maumelle (Ark.) early en route to a 64-53 victory and third-place in the boys gold bracket of the 2018 Neosho Holiday Classic presented by Branco at the Neosho High School Gymnasium.

The Vikings (5-2) used a 16-2 run to start the third quarter and led by as much as 27 in the first half.

Sophomore guard Jaden Hameed led a balanced scoring effort by VASJ with 13 points. Senior guard Jason Priah added 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, senior guard Graham Koppelman added nine points, and Latrace Jackson, Jordan Calhoun and Khalil Mitcham chipped in eight each for the Vikings.

Brahm Harris, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Hornets (7-6).

“We scored 7 points in 30 seconds – might be a VASJ record,” VASJ coach Babe Kwasniak said.

“It was a great weekend for us against elite competition. The hospitality from Neosho was 1st class, we are so honored to be invited and flat-out humbled to receive the award for sportsmanship out of the 16 teams there.  How we act will always more important than how we play …. I’m proud to be the coach of this program.”

VASJ’s Julius Cummings scored 7 points off the bench in critical minutes for the Vikings.

“I think this win is huge, but our two losses are games we feel we could have won and we think our ceiling isn’t even close to reached yet.” Cummings said. “For me, I want to come off the bench and give energy and help this team however I can.”

VASJ earned the Sportsmanship Award at the tournament. Latrace Jackson was second in the dunk contest.
