VASJ sophomore Anika Duhigg took to Cleveland State this past Saturday to compete in the 44th Viking Swimming & Diving Invitational. This was an elite competition that featured over 950 swimmers, competing in front of several college coaches, and Duhigg did not disappoint.
When Anika realized that she had qualified for finals, she looked directly at Coach Scheider and said, “I can definitely go faster tonight at finals.”
Anika finished 19th overall in the 50 freestyle after being seeded at 28. The 50 freestyle had 245 competitors from 62 different teams that came from a total of three different states. That performance places her near the top in the North East District for division II.
VASJ senior Rachel O’Connell took to the pool at Spire Institute for the Jessica Brown Memorial Invitational last Saturday and had a great outcome. O’Connell placed second overall in the 200 freestyle, dropping five seconds off of her previous best time and achieved a time of 2:23.04. After not qualifying for the division II district meet last year due to an early season knee injury, she said, “this puts districts in my sights.”
