On Saturday night, the Lady Vikings basketball hosted the Gilmour Lady Lancers for what turned out to be a fierce game on both sides. The Lady Vikings changed their record to 2-4 after an extremely tough battle against the Lancers, who came out with a 75-57 win over the Vikings.
The Lancers looked strong from the start, pushing the ball up to the court to their main three-point shooters, Puletti and Corcoran, who both hit shots consistently despite the Lady Vikings strong 2-3 zone and man-to-man defense. Gilmour outscored the Lady Vikings 22-8 in the first quarter, but the Vikings changed the tide of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Lancers 17-16 with a three-point shot from Singleton and help from Blacksheer, Ball, and Campbell.
Blacksheer turned on the fast break for the Lady Vikings after half time and got eight of her 16 total points for the night in the third quarter, with excellent passes from freshmen Maya and Morgan Parker, and seniors Campbell and Smith. The battle raged on in the third quarter, with both teams playing extremely physical, and VASJ once again narrowly outscored the Lancers 16-15.
Unfortunately, Gilmour’s shooters and fast offense was too much for the Vikings in the fourth quarter, despite more aggressive defense from the Vikes and continued scoring from Blacksheer, Singleton, and Ball, and the Lancers pulled away at the end of the game to secure their victory.
The Lady Vikings play Euclid at home Monday night at 7 p.m.
