It was a record-setting day for VASJ junior Dylan Barnett on Oct. 20 at the Division III district meet.
However, it was a near miss for the Vikings as a team in their attempt to qualify for the regionals.
Barnett shattered his personal record by more than 30 seconds, finishing 12th overall in a time of 17:41.47 to qualify as an individual for next week’s regional meet at Boardman High School.
The Vikings finished 5th overall as a team, just missing a trip to regionals. The top 4 teams qualify for Boardman.
“Obviously, the shining star was Dylan who went out strong and had enough to finish. He stepped up like this in track as well,” VASJ coach Scott McNulty said.
McNulty also noted Barnett is the first runner to finish below 18 minutes since he’s been head coach.
Sophomore David Hoffmann finished 23rd (18:19.46), freshman BK Kwasniak was 29th (18:45.09), junior Davante Callahan was 48th (19:56.06) and Philip Davis was 50th (19:57.09) to round out the scoring for VASJ.
“The good news is we don’t lose anybody and we have some good freshman on the way,” McNulty said. “I was hoping we would get to regional this year to get that experience, but it wasn’t meant to be I guess.”
