The Lady Vikings basketball persevered through back-to-back games this week against Lake Catholic and St. Thomas Aquinas. Their most recent game against St. Thomas resulted in a 64-51 loss to the undefeated Lady Knights, making the Lady Vikes 10-9 overall.
VASJ played St. Thomas on the road on Thursday night and got off to a strong start with some good jump shots from Aly Mastracola and Jaida Bates to start the first quarter. But the Lady Knights quickly fought back to regain the lead at the end of the first quarter. Hard rolls to the basket and post moves from the Knights put them up by three at halftime.
Our Lady Vikes came out in the third quarter with renewed energy and determination, and battled to keep the score close in the third quarter with three-point shots from Kynadi Burge and Serena Saba, accompanied by free throws from Jenine Saba and Bates, and drives to the basket by Iyana Smith. Ultimately, the Lady Vikes found themselves in foul trouble during the fourth quarter and had trouble scoring against St. Thomas’ hard-nosed defense.
St. Thomas’ #20 and #14 lead the scoreboard for the Knights with 15 and 17 points each overall, while Bates (9 points) and Serena Saba (10 points) lead the scoreboard for the Vikes.
The Lady Vikes play Cleveland Central Catholic at home on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for Senior Night.
