VASJ has been to five straight state championship games, and during that impressive run, the Vikings have usually begun as a top seed at the district tournament.
This year, VASJ will begin it’s quest for Columbus as the No. 2 seed at the Division II Ashtabula Lakeside district. Lake Catholic, which the Vikings defeated, 66-61, on Feb. 10, is the top seed at Lakeside.
VASJ got a bye and will host a sectional final on March 2 against the winner of the 7 vs. 10 matchup between Geneva and Shaw.
“It was nice to beat Lake Catholic (Feb. 10), but I’d much rather beat them a month from now,” VASJ coach Babe Kwasniak said. “They deserve the 1 seed. They’re very good. We will see what happens, but we feel like our program is built for March and hopefully we can continue our recent postseason success.”
West Geauga is the No. 3 seed and could potentially be a district semifinal opponent for the Vikings.
VASJ and Lake Catholic would not meet until the district championship game on March 10.
