Boys Varsity Wrestling · VASJ Wrestling Team: Velez and Josh Longstreet Place In Varsity Meet For The 1st Time

In an extremely competitive field, the Villa Angela-St. Joseph (VASJ) wrestling team finished 8th out of 14 in the Maple Heights Tournament.

The Vikings had several impressive showings. Senior Pat Sheridan pinned both his semifinal and final competitors to take 1st place in the 285 lb. division.

Junior Kiras Kijauskas took 2nd place in the 195 lb. division. Kiras had several pins in the earlier rounds and looks to build upon this great showing in the next tournament.

Senior King Seyou lost a close match to a competitor e he had previously defeated  two weeks ago in one of the earlier rounds. King was disappointed after the loss, but he bounced back strong to finish in 3rd place in the 138 lb. division.

Freshman Josh Longstreet earned a 6th place finish in the 170 lb. division, his first varsity placing.

Senior Carl Chaney wrestled several great matches in the 152 lb. division. During the final period of his quarterfinal match, he held an six point lead. His opponent scored four quick points and had Carl in a pin position for approximately 20 seconds. VASJ head Coach Bob Mullin ’88 poured everything he had into Carl, telling him not to give up and to not get pinned. To Coach Mullin’s liking, Carl did not get pinned.

Senior Ray Velez, who has only been wrestling for two years, finished 5th in the 132 lb.division, earning him his first varsity placement. During Ray’s quarterfinal match he was down eight points in period one. The VASJ coaching staff urged Velez to continue wrestling and Velez slowly crawled back into the match. Velez went on to win the quarter final sudden-death match by scoring two quick points. Velez was greeted by his coaches and teammates after the match to a loud applause and several high fives.

The VASJ wrestling team’s next match will be Thursday, January 11, at Kirtland City Schools.
