Villa Angela-St. Joseph coach Tony Redding isn’t ready to give up the Division II district title quite yet, despite the 7-15 regular-season record.
VASJ easily handled Ashtabula Edgewood in a Division II sectional semi, 65-29, on Feb. 18.
The Vikings will face top-seeded Perry in a sectional title game at Perry.
VASJ ran out to a 22-2 lead after one quarter.
“I was pretty pleased with the focus and the intensity, and we reminded them that we are still defending district champs and it is either win or go home,” Redding said.
“We are looking forward to the next game. We played a tough schedule, but everything is geared toward this time of year.”
Leah Abrams, Serena Saba and Jenine Saba were among the Vikings who played well in the easy win. Redding said the entire team played well and it was a team effort to get by Edgewood.
“This is another opportunity to play. An opportunity to compete. So the question is how far can we take this?” Redding said.
In 2016, VASJ also defeated Edgewood in a sectional semi and then beat Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin to get to the district semifinals. The Vikings knocked off Perry in the district semis and Geneva in the finals to advance to the regionals.
